New York Sports Betting Rules & Regulations – What the Law Says

These popular images are far from reality in today’s sports betting industry in the Empire State.
New York sports betting enthusiasts have many legal and legitimate options to make their wagers. The state has very few restrictions regarding who can place bets on sports and what type of wagering is allowed.
S5883, also known the Upstate New York Gaming Economic Development Act, allows sports betting in New York. Although the bill was passed in 2013, the legalization of sports betting was not implemented until after the repeal of PASPA nationwide in 2018.
New York Sports Betting: Who can bet on it?
New York’s casinos allow adults 21 years old and older to place bets on sports. Only individuals on a gambling self exclusion list or those directly involved in professional or collegiate sports organizations are exceptions.
New York’s sports betting rules prohibit you from betting on sports in NY if your betting falls into one of the following categories
Any athlete whose performance could be used to determine the outcome of such wagering
Any person who is an athlete or player, coach, referee or any other game official or trainer, as well as any team employee or governing body employee in any sport event that is overseen by the body.
Anyone who has access to confidential, non-public information regarding a sporting event that is the subject or wagering
Person identified by a sports governing board to which the commission is in agreement as a prohibited participant in a pool of sports should be reported to the commission.
If the subdivision does not define such a person, it is any person who is in a position of influence or authority that can exert influence on the participants of a sporting event.
You will be permitted to gamble at New York’s sportsbooks as long as you aren’t banned from gambling in the state because of problem behavior or if you don’t fall into one of the above categories.
