It is not surprising that the three relegated Premier League teams from 2020/21 season are all favorites to bounce back. The campaign ended with Watford and Norwich City ensuring their stints in second tier were short. They also gained promotion at the first of the asking. Bournemouth, another relegated club, made it to the play-offs.
All three clubs have new managers, former Everton boss Marco Silva taking over at Craven Cottage. West Brom have brought in Valerien Ismael Barnsley tactician, while Sheffield United have selected Slavisa Jonovic to repeat his 2018 promotion success at Bramall Lane with Fulham.
What about the three Premier League players who have died?
Parker is now in charge of Bournemouth. They finished sixth last year. Parker, an ex-england international, won the play-off final in 2020 with Fulham. He will want to return to the top-flight immediately.
Swansea, perennial play-off contenders, are naturally in this mix. They finished the previous two seasons in the top 6, but their dugout remains vacant with Steve Cooper leaving his post as head coach. With the season’s opening just weeks away, this is not the best preparation for the club.
Bookmaker’s dark horses win the Championship’s top prize
Cardiff, a Welsh rival, is also a candidate to join that group of promotion hopefuls. The Bluebirds are governed by Mick McCarthy, a pragmatic and experienced coach. Six Championship Manager of the month awards dating back to 2005 have been awarded to Mick McCarthy. Experience is a great asset.
It wouldn’t be a Championship season if Neil Warnock didn’t yell from the sidelines. The Teesside soprano from Sheffield will take the reins and try to end Middlesbroughâs four-year exile in the top flight. Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest’s Chris Hughton has a chance at glory.
Champion odds outweigh other markets
There are many other outright markets than the Championship winner. Many bookmakers also offer markets like Promotion, To Finish in The Top Six, Automatic Promotion and To Be Relegated. There are even more markets for specific players such as the Top Scorer.
Champion relegation odds
While promotion brings with it the excitement and highs of promotion, relegation can bring down the spirits and cause heartache. It was a dramatic end to the season 2020/21 in which Derby County and Rotherham United traded places between 21st-24th. However, it was the latter two who joined Wycombe Wanderers as they were relegated to League One.
Just as the newly-relegated clubs are preferred for promotion, so too are the clubs that have been promoted. Many bookmakers believe that League One champions Peterborough United and Blackpool will do a Wycombe to go back down.
