Because of his college hops, Obi Toppin from the New York Knicks should be considered a favorite in 2021 Slam Dunk Contest betting odds. Toppin was the NCAA National Player-of-the-Year at Dayton in 2019-20. He was known for throwing windmills and between the-legs dunks during games. While he hasn’t had as much impact on the court this season with the Knicks, Toppin still shows flashes that he has the explosiveness and hops that earned him the eighth draft.
Cassius Stanley and Anfernee Simons both have decent verticals, but handicapping this event is hard because you never know who is going to do his dunks. Too often, the favorite has been exaggerated to win (cough Aaron Gordon cough), but was then underwhelming with a few missed chances before finally winning.

Surprise! Toppin is losing Barner. The Slam Dunk Contest is a contest where big men are outnumbered, at least in historical terms. Since Blake Griffin’s 2011 victory, only three players have won the event as full time power forwards and centers. Dwight Howard was one of the winners. He is a legend athlete and future Hall of Famer. Larry Nance Sr. was the other winner.
Toppin, who is the tallest contestant in the NCAA, could be facing an uphill battle. He has only 18 dunks during his rookie season. Toppin was the NCAA’s top performer with 107 dunks in his last season. However, he is more of an athlete who can finish plays and is a power dunker than someone who is known for his style and flair. Both Simons and Stanley are explosive athletes who can put on a show for judges.
