Breeders’ Cup Turf Betting | BC’ Turf Entries, Picks & Results

The Breeders Cup Turf is a significant event for horse racing on grass. It’s more important than the BC Classic for fans. The BC Turf is for horses four years and older. It covers 1 1/2 miles and has a purse of $4,000,000. The Turf is an original race in BC’s schedule. In 2003, it produced the only dead heat in the history the Breeders Cup. The 2018 BC Turf will be held on November 3rd.

Tips for Breeders’ Cup Turf Betting

One thing is clear from the BC Turf’s past results: since 1984, when horses bred in the US won the top three spots, the race has been dominated foreign runners. Horses from outside the US have won 20 of the 32 Turf races. Twelve of the winners were Irish-bred, with two winning twice.

Winners from abroad

Three winners were also bred in the UK and one each in France, Germany and Canada. The top three places in the race were occupied by horses from outside the USA seven times, while the US has won the top three three three times only three times. Breeders’ Cup Turf betting has been influenced by the success of European-bred horses.

High Chapparal (IRE in 2003-2004, when he was in Johar’s dead heat, and Conduit in 2008-2009 were the Turf’s two double winners. These back-to-back victories are a sign of another important point in handicapping the Turf: many horses have run the race more times than once in their careers.

Theatrical, another Irish-bred horse, finished second in 1986, and was awarded the title in 1987. Quest For Fame (UK), finished third in 1991 and 1992. Canadian-bred Chief Bearhart placed fourth at Woodbine’s home track in 1996. He then won at Hollywood Park in 1997.

Recent results show that Flintshire was second in 2014, and again in 2016. In 1998-’99, Buck’s Boy and Found won their first Turf appearances. They were then second and third the following year. This means that horses who have performed well in the Turf and have finished in the money once have a good chance of doing it again.

Average odds of winning

The Turf’s average winner is 7-1. There have been a few winners who were in the low single digits. Although only one heavy favorite has won during that period, it is interesting to see that the favorite appears to be second in the Turf four times in five years.

Because Irish-bred horses and other European horses perform well in North America’s BC Turf, it is important to consider past results from horses that came in from overseas when handicapping the race.

Which Horses Should You Back?

Highland Reel had lost three races before winning the Turf in 2016. However, he finished second in two races, the Arc de Triomphe (France) and the Juddmonte International (England), which are the biggest events in those two countries. Found was beaten in three races the year before he entered the BC Turf. However, two of those losses were to runner-up finishes at Group 1 races the previous year, including the Irish Champions Stakes.

However, this does not mean that US-breds should never be considered when handicapping the race. In fact, American horses can often be overlooked at the betting window and offer some value. Four of the 10 BC Turf races have been won by American horses, Little Mike in 2012 being 17-1 and Dangerous Midge in 2010. Both cases paid triple-digit exactas and the latter a Daily Double payout close at $1000.
